Twelve people attended the July 16, 2011, meeting. Thank you, Ann O'Dell for facilitating an excellent meeting.

Thanks too to Paula Shanks and Briggs Massey for providing donuts.

During our time of sharing, most people offered suggestions for books they have read or are currently reading. Although not every book recommendation shared was equally agreed upon by all, it gave us the opportunity to remember that SPAFER is not a place to debate, but a safe place to express ones views and ideas without the need to defend them.

After viewing a 30 minute interview with Fr. Thomas Keating, best known for his work in developing and teaching Centering Prayer, we had a lively and positive discussion regarding the various types of prayer.

Please click here to view/download a PDF file that includes an overview of four types or stages of prayer and the God concept that most often accompanies such prayer. It is interesting to note that as our concept of God evolves, our approach to prayer changes as well.

Next month's meeting will be Saturday, August 20. We will hear an interview with Dr. Seyyed Hassein Nasr, Professor of Religious Studies at Georgetown University.
Dr. Nasr's comments focus on establishing a bridge of understanding between the West and the religion of Islam. This will complete our viewing of the PBS Series,
"Searching For God In America."

Until we meet again, a quote to ponder: "Truth is the offspring of silence and unbroken meditation."
Guess who? Answer: Sir Issac Newton
