David Bains, our discussion leader
David R. Bains is assistant professor of religion in the Howard
College of Arts and Sciences, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama.
There he teaches courses in the History of Christianity and in World
Religions. He has recently expanded Samford's offerings in world
religions through a new course focusing on myths and rituals. He
earned the Ph.D. in the Study of Religion from Harvard University
in 1999. At Harvard he served as a teaching fellow in Diana Eck's
course on "Religion in Multi-Cultural America," Peter
Gomes' course on "The Christian Bible and its Interpretation,"
and David Hall's course on "Religion in America." His
primary research interests are in American religious history, particularly
in the so-called Protestant Establishment and in Christian worship
in the twentieth century. He is a 1993 graduate of the University
of Virginia and a native of Hampton, Virginia.
